In the class we touched on media portrayals and where women get their ideas of beauty. We rarely see hero myths about women or narratives about female struggle. My mind immediately went to film. All girls my age know mean girls is a cult film! When I discover girls who haven’t seen Mean Girls I am super shocked. When I saw a Huffington Post article titled “What Regina George teaches us about beauty” I immediately clicked on it. It gave a list of superficial or unrealistic ideas about beauty women in general, in the best outlet possible! THROUGH MEMES! Although I found this list hilarious it made me think about how girls lives are portrayed through film. How many movies have we seen with the tired story line of a lame girl, crushing on a popular guy, she gets a makeover, he dates her and THEN sees her great personality? Backwards isn’t it? Although these films are watched for entertainment purposes we have to think about the esteem placed on superficial beauty in our culture. Just think about it, Cady’s makeover with the plastics, Tai’s makeover with Cher and Dionne, to even take it further back Sandy’s makeover with the Pink Ladies. These movies give the false notion that all actions you do are null and void unless you are beautiful. That you can’t get the guy of your dreams until the popular girl gives you a makeover. A hair cut will change your life. And of course you all will live happily ever after. We need to wake up and realize what we put our in our media is detrimental to the development of our young girls. There’s more fiction in these stories than fact. We need to encourage girls to find their confidence from within instead of a new hairstyle, the man of their dreams or the popular girls at school
